Wet hair is at its most vulnerable state. Instead, use a paper towel, an old shirt, or a super absorbent microfiber towel to pat the hair dry and gently squeeze out the extra moisture.

Lastly, when styling your hair, try to avoid heat as much as possible. If you absolutely must use a flat iron invest in a ceramic one to minimize the damage.
